On February 23, 1540, Francisco Vasquez de Coronado set out to find the Seven Cities of Cibola, places so rich that the doors of common homes were said the be clad in gold and studded with sapphires!
What does this have to do with selling stuff on eBay? Everything!
Stick with me....
Coronado was the first full-fledged treasure hunter to set out for the New World. Conquistadors before him had acquired riches, but that was not their main goal. They where after land, power and fame. Coronado was different. The hunt for treasure drive him.
Almost 400 years later, in 1930, the great folklorist J. Frank Dobie wrote a book about lost mines and buried treasure in the Southwest.
Dobie believed that those who searched for lost riches were the inheritors of Coronado, whether they rushed to California ablaze with gold fever or slogged after the lost treasure of pirate Jean Laffite in the bays of Texas.
